Charles L. Hooper ’56

Charles Lee Hooper, 90, of Gales Ferry, passed away peacefully Sunday Sept. 21, 2025, at his residence. Charles was born Dec. 2, 1934, in Biddeford, Maine to Verner Ethelbrick Hooper and Louise Mildred Wilcox Hooper. He married Nancy Ann Clair April 23, 1960. She preceded him in death May 23, 2021.

After graduating from Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine, he went on to serve in the U.S. Navy. He traveled the world in both the U.S. Navy and as a Merchant Marine, before settling in Connecticut.

Charles went on to work for General Dynamics. He was the chief fueling engineer for the nuclear submarines at Electric Boat until his retirement in 1995.

Charles loved the ocean and was a long-time sailor, he enjoyed fixing things around the house, and taking cruises with his wife, friends and family.

He will be missed by all who knew him.

Charles is survived by his daughter, Mary Hooper of Gales Ferry; son David Hooper of Palmdale Calif.; son Steven Hooper and his wife Gail of Gales Ferry; grandsons, Christopher and his wife Rosemary of London, U.K. and Elijah and his wife Julie of Toronto, Canada; granddaughter Hannah and her fiancé Tyler of Norwich; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his beloved wife, Nancy, he was preceded in death by sister Virginia Litwinowich.
